The Glasgow Philosophical Society

A cynanotype print in the Proceedings of the Glasgow Philosophical Society, 1889

The Glasgow Philosophical Society was founded in 1802 to create a centre for discussion of the sciences and arts, with a view to helping the city’s trade and development through the exchange of ideas and exploration of new research. Over its history it has been able to count some of the greatest names in Scottish science and philosophy amongst its members, including Joseph Lister and William Thomson, Lord Kelvin.

The Society continues to thrive today and its website is here. A history of the Society has been produced and this can be read here.

The Signet Library has been chosen as the custodian of the Society’s set of its publications and these can be consulted at the Library by researchers and scholars – see here for details.
