Introduction

In commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the official opening of the Signet Library’s home in Edinburgh’s Parliament Square, the WS Society is opening this online exhibition which over the course of the year will explore the Signet Library’s history and collections as never before and to open international scholarly access to vital Library materials for the first time.

The Signet Library 200th Anniversary Online Exhibition is divided into four sections which will be added to over the course of the anniversary year. Click on the image below to visit each section.

Signet Library Digitized Originals: Digitizations and transcripts of original materials in the collections of the Signet Library previously unpublished and now made available for wider study.

Art, Artifacts and Ephemera: The Signet Library Archives Artifacts and Ephemera Collection contains many thousands of works and items ranging from precious oil paintings, watercolours and prints to seals, photographs and historic collections of furniture.

Signet Library Collection Guides: a series of introductions to the Signet Library’s historic printed and manuscript holdings, art and ephemera.

The History of the WS Society and Signet Library: a new online presentation containing fresh research into the background of the Society, its home and collections.
